The Local Government Reform Commission has stated that it is possible to complete all local government elections in the country by June. This was mentioned in the preliminary report released by the commission on Saturday (22nd February).

The recommendations suggest that all local government elections can be held simultaneously. Elections for Union Parishads, Upazila Parishads, Municipalities, City Corporations, and Zila Parishads across both plain and hilly areas can be completed by June.

The report also notes that a new, transparent canvas has now emerged, making it possible to sketch a new picture. Otherwise, legal complexities regarding the expiration of the terms of several institutions before the elections may arise.

The opportunity has now arisen, and it is suggested that a unified local government election for five institutions could be conducted through an ordinance between March-April (2025). On November 18, five reform commissions, including the media, health, labor, women's issues, and local government reform commissions, were formed by the interim government.

The commission was formed under the leadership of Professor Toffail Ahmed, former chair of the Department of Public Administration at Chittagong University. Seven other members worked under his leadership.
